The 2026 American Gold Buffalo Coin celebrates an important milestone: the 20th anniversary of the series, which was first introduced by the United States Mint in 2006. Alongside the 40th anniversary of the American Eagle Series, the Gold Buffalo remains one of the nation’s most iconic and respected 24-karat gold bullion coins.

DESIGN

The obverse design showcases James Earle Fraser’s iconic depiction of a Native American, originally created for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel. Fraser combined the facial features of three different indigenous figures to create a portrait that honors the spirit and dignity of Native Americans rather than portraying a single individual.

The reverse design, also by Fraser, features the American bison in left-profile relief. Based on Black Diamond, a bison that lived at New York’s Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century, the bison is shown with its head lowered, grazing on a small mound of earth, a symbol of strength, resilience, and the American frontier.
