The South African mint launched the Krugerrand in 1967 to market South African gold, accounting for almost 80% of global gold sales by 1980. In 2017 a 999.9% silver version was introduced to mark the Krugerrand’s 50th anniversary.

The Big Five is synonymous with South African wildlife. These magnificent animals have been intrinsically linked to South African currency since 1988 when they were first used on the South African banknote range. For the first time in 2019, the South African Mint released a series of coins which had the Big Five as its theme. The so called “Big 5” are the African Elephant, the Lion, the Rhino, the Leopard and the Buffalo. In 2022,  the Big Five Series II continues with the launch of a new design of the Lion.
