When the Royal Australian Mint’s Kangaroo Series first hopped onto the scene in 1993 it was met with instant acclaim. Fast forward 29 years and the 2022 edition is here with an all-new, one-year-only design that captures the majesty of the iconic marsupial from Down Under and the harsh terrain where it reigns supreme. This coin design for 2022 commemorates The Heidelberg School of painters who worked together at artists’ camps around Melbourne and Sydney in the 1880s and 1890s who as a group created a style that is known today as Australian impressionism. This design shows the ever-present icon of the bush, the eternal Kangaroo, looking over its shoulder while impressions of Australia’s distinct landscape form a backdrop for the amazing one-year-only design. The emphasis on form, clarity, and composition is achieved through suggestions of landscape—a key approach of the Australian Impressionist Movement.
